The Importance of Reading

Research shows that reading aloud to children is the single most important activity for developing the knowledge that leads to success in reading. When we read to children, we also promote their growth across domains including listening, language, literacy, cognition and social-emotional skills. Because children who are deaf or hard of hearing often experience delays in these areas, reading aloud together becomes even more valuable.

Book Recommendations

We’re growing a library of book recommendations to support literacy and enhance families’ reading experiences. Follow along on social media with the hashtag #ClarkeBookClub. While we are committed to sharing helpful resources, we are equally devoted to better understanding the needs of students and families and honoring your requests. Please email us at diversity@clarkeschools.org to share your feedback, requests for support and any other comments.
