Local Officials, Community Members Attend Grand Opening of Clarke's New Location at Saint Joseph's University

National nonprofit in Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) education forms monumental partnership with prominent Philadelphia university.

Clarke hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the grand opening of its newly relocated Pennsylvania site at Saint Joseph’s University. This partnership represents a significant milestone in Clarke’s mission to teach children who are deaf or hard of hearing to listen and talk, bringing together Clarke’s expertise in Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) education and Saint Joseph’s strong academic programs.

The event was attended by local officials, Clarke leadership and members of the Saint Joseph’s University community. Attendees toured the new facility, which will enhance services for children with hearing loss while providing experiential learning and research opportunities for university students.

The newly renovated location at 5414 Overbrook Avenue offers Clarke Pennsylvania expanded opportunities for interprofessional collaboration, equipping children who are deaf or hard of hearing to develop essential LSL skills. Clarke’s students work with a team of expertly trained teachers of the deaf, audiologists and speech-language pathologists to succeed in mainstream schools and beyond.

“This new location at Saint Joseph’s University represents a major milestone for Clarke Pennsylvania,” says Ashley Mahlstedt Weaver, MED, director of Clarke Pennsylvania. “With this partnership, we’re positioned to expand our services to reach even more children, families and professionals, sharing the skills and tools students with hearing loss need to thrive.”

Saint Joseph’s University is equally excited about the partnership. Joshua Power, BS ’05, EdD ’16, dean of the School of Education and Human Development, noted, “This partnership expands opportunities for SJU students to engage in experiential learning while addressing the needs of the deaf and hard of hearing community at Clarke.”

The ribbon cutting event featured a tour of the state-of-the-art facilities and remarks from Clarke staff and community partners. Learn more about this exciting partnership at clarkeschools.org/pamove, and see photos from the event here.
