Daily reading leads to above average grade reading levels in children with hearing loss (Robertson & Flexer, 1993). In addition, research shows that learning is enhanced when students acquire knowledge through active processes that engage them (Harthorn and Boren, 1990). This webinar for families will demonstrate how to support early literacy skill development through interactive shared reading in school and at home. Topics will include selection of age-appropriate books, goals and vocabulary development. The hierarchy for learning will be discussed during this presentation to coach caregivers and guide professionals. The importance of using objects (manipulatives) will be demonstrated to engage children of various age levels. Examples of interactive reading experiences which incorporate a variety of auditory, speech, vocabulary and language targets will be shared with the audience including target categories (e.g., articulation, vocabulary, concepts, structures, questions, auditory skills, and literacy benchmarks).
