Reimagining the In-Service:
Ditching the one-and-done team training in favor of consistent communication with teams
Presenters: Brittany Dorn, PhD and Emily Snow, MED
Often our work as teachers of students who are deaf or hard of hearing (TSDHH) includes teaching the school team about our students' unique needs. This fall training, or in-service, often occurs as a one-time presentation. However, research shows that one-time professional development is ineffective at changing teacher practice. Instead, ongoing communication and authentic practice are needed to create change. This presentation pulls from behavior change models and adult learning theory in order to show how TSDHH can ditch the "one and done" team training in favor of ongoing, consistent communication with teams. This presentation is relevant not only to TSDHH but to other special educators.
