Deaf Plus: Best Practices for LSL Professionals
- June 28-29, 2023
- Virtual, live and on-demand
- Clarke Presenter: Barbara F. Hecht, PhD
Participants will learn about the prevalence, current research, challenges and best practices for LSL professionals serving young children and students who have hearing loss and a range of additional disabilities (Deaf Plus).
.
The presentation will first explore some of the underlying causes of many co-occurring conditions and the difficulties associated with timely identification and diagnosis of additional disabilities in children who are DHH. We will then use small groups (breakout rooms), recorded interviews, and published research to consider some of the challenges facing professionals who provide LSL services to children who are DHH Plus and their families. Children who are DHH Plus require specialized expertise from an expanded educational and therapeutic team. We will examine the role of the LSL professional on that team and some service delivery models and best practices that support children’s optimal development and academic achievement.
Participants will then observe recorded interviews with experienced LSL professionals, parents and the students themselves about their own experiences and their recommendations for effective ways to support students who are DHH Plus and their families.
The presentation will conclude with a discussion of directions for future research and professional development.
