Barbara Hecht, Nationally Recognized Leader in the Field of Deaf Education, Appointed as Director of Clarke's Boston Campus

September 21, 2011—Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech has announced the appointment of Dr. Barbara Hecht as the next director of the Clarke Boston-area campus. Dr. Hecht is a nationally recognized expert in early childhood deafness, language intervention, and parent and professional education.

Dr. Hecht has had an accomplished career as an educator, professor, advocate, innovator in distance learning, and most recently, as the President of John Tracy Clinic (JTC) in Los Angeles. Since 1942, JTC has been providing services to families of children with hearing loss free of charge. While there, Dr. Hecht oversaw all programs, services, and strategic planning.

Bill Corwin, Clarke’s President, said, “We are very pleased to have someone as talented and respected as Dr. Hecht join the Clarke family. She is a nationally recognized leader and expert in the field of deaf education, and her enthusiasm and innovative style will be an asset not only to the children and families of Clarke Boston, but to the entire Clarke community as well.”

“Working in California for so many years,” says Hecht, “I’ve always considered Clarke as my East Coast deaf education home, and regard many of Clarke’s professional staff as some of my best colleagues.” Referring to the advances in the field, she says that, “We are now in a period of unprecedented advances in early intervention and deaf education.  We have a responsibility to ensure that our expertise is available to as many children with hearing loss as possible.”

Dr. Hecht received her bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and doctoral degree in linguistics with an emphasis on child language development from Stanford University. She joined John Tracy Clinic in 1992, and served as Vice President of Counseling, Audiology and Teacher Education before being named president in September 2003. While there, she also served as a Clinical Professor of Special Education in the University of Southern California (USC) Rossier School of Education and later at the University of San Diego. Prior to joining John Tracy Clinic, Dr. Hecht was a faculty member in a Special Education/Educational Psychology doctoral program at UCLA.

She has served, among other capacities, as a member of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Constituent Expert Working Group for Effective Interventions for Infants and Young Children with Hearing Loss; on the United States Surgeon General’s Publication Committee on Hearing Loss in Children, and on the Advisory Committee of the California State Commission on Post-Secondary Education: Improving Teacher Quality.

Dr. Hecht replaces former director of the Clarke Boston-area campus, Cara Jordan.
