History-Making Deaf Pilot to Address Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech Northampton Graduates

May 27, 2011—President Bill Corwin and the Board of Trustees invite you to celebrate Clarke Commencement honoring the Clarke School Class of 2011, Smith College/Clarke School Graduate Teacher Education Program Class of 2011 and the Young Graduates from our Five East Coast Schools. The ceremony will take place on June 11, 2011 at 10:30 AM in Northampton, MA at the Helen Hills Hills Chapel (123 -125 Elm Street).

Four graduates from Clarke’s Middle School in Northampton and twelve masters degree students from the Smith College/Clarke School Graduate Program in Teacher Education will be receiving diplomas. Clarke will also celebrate more than 35 “young graduates” from our five east coast campuses.

Transformational speaker, Stephen Hopson, will deliver the commencement address. A luncheon will follow on the Clarke campus.

About the Commencement Speaker

Transformational speaker Stephen Hopson is the first deaf person in aviation history to earn an instrument-rated pilot’s license. He has been featured on CNN, in The New York Times and on countless radio shows. He speaks around the country and has been a contributing author for several books including the best-selling Chicken Soup for the College Soul (July 1999), Heartwarmers (April 2000) and Magical Souvenirs: True Spiritual Adventures from Around the World (March 2002).

Profoundly deaf since birth, Stephen managed to defy the odds by also becoming a successful Wall Street stockbroker. While in this position, he built and managed multi-million dollar investment portfolios for his clients. In 1996, he gave up his lucrative career to become an inspirational speaker and author. His latest book, Obstacle Illusions: Transforming Adversity Into Success was released in March 2011.
