Two Clarke Alums win AG Bell College Scholarships


June 19, 2014—Congratulations to Emily Hewlings (Clarke Northampton Alum) and Julia Filloon (Clarke Jacksonville Alum) for winning AG Bell College Scholarships this year.

The AG Bell College Scholarship Committee announced that 18 scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 were awarded to 18 outstanding applicants. These recipients were selected through a competitive review process of 131 eligible applicants. The scholarships total $100,000.

Emily Hewlings is a Clarke Northampton alumna and graduated from eighth grade in Northampton in 2008. Emily was born profoundly deaf and received a cochlear implant when she was two years old. She attended Clarke for six years. Her senior year at Clarke she was awarded a number of honors, including the Bill G. Blevins Prize for Character, Loyalty and Service and was chosen by her classmates to speak at her own commencement ceremony. Emily went on to attend high school at Stoneleigh-Burnham School, where she served as captain of the varsity softball team, President of the Community Service club and participated in a number of other school clubs and activities. Emily graduated from high school in 2012 and received the Prospect Hill Prize for Integrity, Dignity and Service. A recipient of the 2013 Cochlear Graeme Clark Scholarship, Emily is a student at Goucher College studying English and Psychology.

Julia Filloon is a Clarke Jacksonville alumna who was identified with a profound hearing loss at birth. Julia's parents Dennis and Ann researched their options and wanted Julia to learn to listen and talk. She received a cochlear implant around two years of age and received auditory verbal therapy at Clarke schools for Hearing and Speech. Her mother Ann drove Julia and her brother Brett who also has cochlear implants, three hours each way from Tallahassee Florida to Jacksonville FL for their auditory verbal therapy sessions once a week until they were dismissed. Julia has been mainstreamed since preschool and has excelled in her speech, language and academics.
