Clarke Northampton Audiologist Selected to Present at Conference

January 21, 2014—Joni Skinner, AuD, an audiologist for Clarke's Northampton, MA Hearing Center has been selected as a Breakout Session speaker at "Map Through the Maze" in Marlborough, MA on May 21, 2014. This is a conference for Alzheimer Care Professionals. There is actually a "speaker wait list" so to be selected to present in the first round is quite an accomplishment.

Joni's talk, entitled Hear Me Now, Remember it Later: Hearing Loss and Dementia is scheduled during session B at 1:15 to 2:30 pm and will cover:

  1. The relationship between hearing loss and dementia.
  2. The impact of audiological treatment for individuals with memory loss.
  3. How to implement communication strategies for persons with both hearing and cognitive impairment.

This workshop will offer a review of the research that is revealing a strong correlation between hearing loss and cognitive function; provide increased awareness of how to provide enhanced support to your clients and their families with the goal of aging in place; and allow participants to gain a better understanding of how they can help those with dementia to optimize their ability to communicate and participate in the world around them thereby improving their overall quality of life.

This is a lot to pack into 1.25 hours hours, but this important topic will help to plant the seed with care givers, and will be a critical first step in providing services and support to this population.
