Students Bring Holiday Cheer to a Special Classmate

January 5, 2014—Students in the Young Voices Program, a collaboration between Clarke and the Worcester School District, recently helped brighten the holidays for one special friend.

Yan Perez Garcia, a kindergarten student in the Young Voices Program, was diagnosed at 6 months old with a brain tumor. Yan has been in the hospital since October 27th, away from his friends and teachers at school, family, and his favorite activities, like football and baseball. While treatment has left Yan with many side effects, including his hearing loss, he never lets his condition get him down. He is always wearing a smile and quick to serenade his friends with a hearty rendition of “You are my Sunshine.”

To show Yan how much they missed him, students in the Young Voices Program and mainstream classrooms made special ornaments, cards, and gifts for Yan. Teachers Ms. Christine and Ms. Valerie delivered over 300 ornaments and cards this December. Yan received letters of hope and love, snowflakes, bells, wreaths and a reindeer. His favorite gift of all was a World Series baseball from the Boston Red Sox!

Yan’s family thanks the Clarke community for their support and encourages Clarke friends to follow Yan’s Facebook page for updates: facebook.com/YansFighters
