Team Clarke takes Manhattan (and Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx!)

November 13, 2013—Team Clarke was well-represented at this year’s ING New York City Marathon held on November 3, 2013. Stephen Albarran (Clarke NY parent), Jonathan Berger (Clarke NY parent) Kathleen Brown (Clarke PA parent), Fernando Garza (Clarke NY parent), Mary Jane Johnson (Assistant Director of Clarke Boston), and Rodan Luo (friend of Clarke NY), faced down 26.2 daunting miles in honor of children who are deaf and hard of hearing. The world’s largest marathon, the ING New York City Marathon draws over 45,000 participants from all over the world each year.

Team Clarke Race Results

Stephen Albarran ran in honor of his infant daughter Mila who, just 2 days before the race, underwent cochlear implant surgery. Stephen completed the marathon in 03:58:39 and raised $17,668 for Clarke.

Jon Berger, an accomplished attorney and cochlear implant recipient, ran in honor of his family, including daughters Noa (NY alum) and Eila (current NY student) and wife Meredith (Director of Clarke New York). Jon posted a marathon time of 04:48:09 and raised $9,321 in donations for Clarke.

Kathleen Brown ran for her daughter, Alyssa, a Clarke PA student. Her inspiring story was featured on the Crowdrise homepage in the weeks leading up to the Marathon (read the article online). Kathleen ran a 03:51:09 race and helped raise over $4,576 for Clarke.

Fernando Garza ran for his son, Sebastian, posting a 04:50:08 race time and raising over $3,520 for Clarke. He credits his cheering squad (including son Sebastian!) with helping him finish the race.

A friend of the Albarran family, Rodan Luo ran her race in honor of baby Mila and the children and families of Clarke. On Marathon Sunday, Rodan wore a special “Mila” jersey inspiring “thousands of yells!” Rodan ran a 04:33:52 marathon and raised more than $3,480 for Clarke.

Mary Jane Johnson, an experienced runner and Assistant Director of Clarke Boston, was proud to once again run as part of Team Clarke. In August, Mary Jane completed the challenging Falmouth Road Race for the third time. At the Marathon, Mary Jane achieved her race time and fundraising goals, posting a 04:37:12 time and raising over $2,675 for Clarke.
