Clarke Hosts 34th Annual Conference on Mainstreaming Students with Hearing Loss

November 8, 2013—Clarke Mainstream Services hosted its 34th Annual Conference on Mainstreaming Students with Hearing Loss in Springfield, MA on October 17th and 18th. Over the course of these two days, 199 professionals and parents came together for workshops, inspiring key-note addresses, and networking opportunities.

In addition to drawing speakers from around the country, Clarke was well represented with five sessions led by staff from Mainstream Services, Program Information, and Clarke New York.

Several new educational resources were also announced at the 2013 Conference. Mainstream Services unveiled its newest booklet, Sound Advice: Information Related to the Audiological Management of Students with Hearing Loss in Mainstream Settings. This booklet is the second in a series of compilations offering frequently referenced and requested articles from our newsletter, Mainstream News, and it is now available at our online store. Clarke President Bill Corwin also announced the launch of Hear Me Out, Clarke's first blog for teachers of the deaf. Written by Clarke itinerant teacher Heather Stinson, the blog features tips and resources for educators working with students with hearing loss in mainstream settings.

Day two of the conference featured the 11th Annual “Making Connections!” program. Two outstanding role models, Carrie Spangler (an educational audiologist) and Evan Brunell (President of the MA Chapter of the A.G. Bell association, freelance baseball journalist and former Clarke student), led a fantastic group of 12 mainstreamed middle and high school students. Through hands-on activities – and a lot of discussion and laughter –students learned from their leaders and one another as they explored communication solutions related to technology, classroom and social situations. The smiles, hugs and exchanges of contact information at the end of the day were a sure sign that new connections had been made!
