Support Elaine’s Cooking Class

My class enjoys cooking a new treat every Wednesday. We bake cookies, make fruit salad, and even create homemade playdough! My students, who come from all over New York City, all have hearing loss and use hearing aids or cochlear implants. Many of my students’ parents speak Spanish at home, and we all enjoy learning a little Spanish at school! Cooking – or cocinar -- is a great way for our students, who are still learning to speak and listen, to learn important vocabulary, practice taking turns, and develop the fine motor skills necessary to pour ingredients into little measuring spoons without making Ms. Elaine’s table messy! Food is very important in many of my students’ home cultures, and practicing the language of cooking at school gives them plenty of things to talk about in the kitchen with their families. Of course, the children also love cooking because the reward is usually a tasty snack!

Our class could really use some new cooking and baking equipment. New measuring cups, pots and pans, and mixing bowls will enrich our cooking activities and allow my students to practice important language skills in an exciting, hands-on way.

Our goal of $1,000 will help us outfit our kitchen and get cooking!

$20 would help us purchase measuring cups, measuring spoons, or a cutting board.
$50 would help us purchase a set of mixing bowls, a rolling pin, or kitchen utensils.
$100 would help us purchase an appliance like a juicer, or a set of good-quality bakeware.
$150 would help us purchase a set of pots and pans or a mixer.

Thank you very much for supporting us!

About Me

My name is Elaine Smolen, and I am a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at Clarke’s New York campus.  I have a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Education of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing and a Master’s Degree in Education of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Elementary Education, both from The College of New Jersey.  I am hard of hearing, and I have always been interested in helping children with hearing loss grow and succeed.  It is a lot of fun to be a hard of hearing role model for my students—they’re always amazed to see an adult with hearing aids!   I love working with the three- and four-year-olds in my class at Clarke because they learn new things every day, as do I!  I am continually impressed with the hard work of my students and their families and am honored to make a difference in their lives.
